Before the town was recognized as a town, it was home to a massive artillery manufacturing plant. During incorporation proceedings in 1955, a contest was held to give the town its name. The plant had made shells used by the HMS Ajax during its most significant naval battle, hence the winning name chosen was Ajax and the name was immediately adopted.
