RV Lifestyle Yuma, Arizona Yuma is Arizona’s warmest winter city and the sunniest year-round place in the U.S. The town averages about 308 sunny days every year, compared to the U.S. average of only 205. Yuma has a classic low desert climate with extremely low humidity. From golf courses to breathtaking natural scenery and dining to shopping, there is a diverse selection of recreational activities and cultural attractions. One of the most interesting things to do in town is to tour the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park. The first seven inmates in this former prison were locked into jail cells that they built for themselves. You can now walk through the old cells, the solitary chamber, the guard tower and around the grounds, as well as see photographs and exhibits showing the prison’s history. Ajo, Arizona Ajo is less than an hour from theMexican border in Southern Arizona. It’s also the closest town to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, where you can see the unique organ pipe cactus with its many long, prickly arms. Organ Pipe Cactus preserves the northernmost natural habitat of the Organ Pipe Cactus, as well as amazing examples of desert plants, animals, geology and human history. Enjoy the trails and scenic drives, the starlit nights, and the sun-filled days. Be sure to drive the 16.7-kilometre Ajo Scenic Loop through an historic section of Ajo, then through a wonderland of saguaro, organ pipe and other diverse cacti and Sonoran Desert vegetation. Ajo’s reason for being is the massive, open-pit New Cornelia copper mine. This inactive mine just outside of town measures about 2.4 kilometres across at its widest point and 335 metres deep at the centre. There is a lookout, where you can stop and get views of the mine, as well as a museum to learn more about the history. 28 | www.snowbirds.org
