Food & Drink Should we drink water fromplastic bottles? What water is better for us? Bottled water, filtered water, distilled water, reverse osmosis water or tap water? Just be sure to drink enough water each day, I say! It is important to do your research to determine what kind of water you want to drink on a regular basis. If you are like me, and you do not drink enough water throughout the day, there are ways to increase your consumption. I don’t think I will ever build up my routine to drink eight glasses every day. Our weight and type and amount of exercise we do also helps to determine how much water we should be drinking daily. I have been starting slowly and easing my way into drinking more water each day. I now choose tea or water over soda. Unless I have done a hard workout and crave water, drinking it for no reason can be almost annoying. There are countless ways to spice up the experience. Infusing water with herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables adds minerals and vitamins to increase its nutritional benefits. Infusions also make water taste more refreshing, slightly tangy, spicy or sweet…and delicious! Infused water can: • Look more appetizing to increase consumption. • Taste more flavourful. • Have less sugar and fewer calories than juice. • Act as a detoxifier. • Be healthier than soda. • Boost your metabolism by adding vitamin C. • Satiate you to make you eat less. • Keep you from feeling groggy in the afternoon. • Flush toxins from your body. • Improve your mood through hydration. • Reduce muscle fatigue during a workout. • And more... To make infused water, choose organic ingredients. Wash all ingredients well. Use room temperature water. Slice big fruits into thin slices or small cubes. Here are some infused water combinations worth trying: • blackberries and fresh mint • blood-orange coconut water • pineapple and ginger • blueberries, orange and fresh mint • pear, ginger and cinnamon • aloe vera and lime • cranberry, lemon and fresh mint • lime and fresh basil • dandelion • strawberries and fresh mint • cucumber, lime and fresh thyme • fresh rosemary and lemon • grapefruit and fresh rosemary CSANews | SPRING 2019 | 45
