Fitness by Jennifer Cox Working out at a gymhas lots of perks: weather is never an issue; you have everything you need for a full-body workout under one roof; and it’s a structured place that makes it easier to commit to regular exercise. However, there can be certain pitfalls when joining a gym and it’s important to do your due diligence before committing to any sort of membership. So, here are a few dos and don’ts of exercising at the gym. Dos and Don’ts of working out at the gym THE DOS Do your research Don’t just sign up at a new gym because it happened to open around the corner fromwhere you live. Part of the success of going to the gym will depend on how you feel when you’re there. You want a place that feels comfortable and clean, with your pace and your kind of crowd. Do work with a personal trainer It’s imperative that you know where to start your workout (in terms of weights, etc.), as well as how the machines properly work. Today’s digital exercise gadgets can be extremely efficient and beneficial, but only if you know how to properly use the equipment. A personal trainer can walk you through all of that and get you on a safe and realistic workout plan. Do track your progress The gym can be a great place to help you keep track of your fitness goals, whether it’s a certain target weight or a particular accomplishment (for example, you want to be able to do one set of pushups after three months). Keeping a record of your achievements will also be a great source of encouragement. Do try new things Many of today’s gyms offer a whole slew of different classes and organized sports, from aerobics, dance and yoga to racquetball and squash, martial arts and so much more. Take advantage of all that variety – after all, you’re paying for a membership to the entire facility. Make the most of it! Do consult with your family physician As always, never start a new exercise regimen without checking in with your family doctor. THE DON’TS Don’t go at it alone Some workout places are “open” 24 hours, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s always someone there. While an early-morning cardio session before the crowds may seem like a good idea, it’s never safe to work out in a gym alone. Don’t rush it So, you love the gym? That’s great. However, you don’t want to overdo it. You shouldn’t be frequenting it daily (although this can be tempting in that beginner excitement). Ease yourself into a more active lifestyle. It will only set you back further if you end up rushing things and get injured. Pace yourself. Your body will thank you for it. Don’t get frustrated by minor setbacks Sometimes there are unexpected accidents, illnesses or injuries. Things happen. And, while it’s a bummer, that’s life. Don’t let it get you down. One of the great things about going to exercise on a regular basis at a gym is that once you’re enrolled, it will become a part of your routine. Take the time you need to properly recover and then get back to it! Don’t make it a chore Working out can be fun. Really. You just need a place where you can find enjoyment in physical activity. And that can be the gym. Whether it’s having access to state-of-the-art machines and equipment, or classes to explore different types of exercise and socially engage with other people, find a facility that is right for you. 38 | www.snowbirds.org
